While many powersports riders have already stored their UTVs for the winter, it doesn't mean that you still can’t ride yours! Riding a side-by-side during the cold weather simply requires a little more preparation, to ensure that you’re warm and comfortable. When it comes to below-freezing temperatures, it’s necessary to take some precautionary measures to make sure you’re traveling safely and avoiding any cold weather effects.

Here are a few ways to keep warm this winter, while riding your UTV!

Wear Layers

You need to dress in preparation for the cold weather, while also making sure that you’re protected for side-by-side riding. Dressing in layers is the best strategy for staying warm, rather than just throwing a coat over your standard riding clothes. Wool and polyester layers will help wick away sweat and keep you warm, during your ride.

Consider investing in additional cold weather clothing and accessories to stay warm, such as a balaclava, waterproof boots, insulated gloves, wool socks and a helmet with a visor and breath deflector.

Upgrade Your UTV

Another way to prepare for winter riding is to modify your side-by-side with an enclosed cab. Check to see whether the manufacturer of your UTV makes a cab that you can fit onto your specific model. You can usually choose between hard-panel and soft-panel options, but keep in mind that hard-panel options are more insulated and protective!

Limit Exposure

It’s important to remain more vigilant during the winter, due to safety hazards like icy roads, melted snow and limited visibility. When you’re out riding, don’t be afraid to cut your ride short to warm up.

If you begin to feel uncomfortable, immediately head indoors rather than try to brave the cold. Watch for signs of frostbite and hypothermia, including feeling numbness in your extremities.
