How to Safely Transport a Generator
When moving a generator, safety should be the priority. It's important to reduce the chances of personal injury - as well as any expensive damage to the power equipment itself.
Here at Arizona Honda, we strive to make your life easier. We gathered up the following tips for safely transporting a generator. Before You Move the Generator
Check the Owner's Manual
Look at the owner's manual to see if there are any specific things you need to do or not do for your particular model. After all, who knows the power equipment better than the company who created it?
Get the Generator Cooled Down
If you recently used the generator, wait at least 20 minutes. This is because power equipment needs time to cool down before you transport it.
Double Check the Fuel Valve
Make sure the fuel valve is turned off. If it's not, fuel can go into the crankcase and make the oil less effective.
Build a Spill Kit
It's wise to create a spill kit in advance. Hopefully, it won't be needed. But if a spill does occur, you will be ready to address it.
A spill kit should include gloves, funnels for dispensing the fuel, and absorbent materials designed to soak up the spill.
When Moving the Power Equipment
Use the Handholds
Power equipment is often designed with handholds for easy, safe transportation. Use them!
Focus On the Generator's Position
As much as possible, keep the power equipment upright. If the generator turns over, it could spill fuel.
When Transporting Power Equipment With a Vehicle
Sometimes, you will only need to walk your generator a short distance. In other cases, you will be transporting the power equipment with a truck bed or trailer.
Secure the Power Equipment
Get the generator situated upright. Use bungee cords or tie-down straps to secure the power equipment. Be sure to also lock the wheels, which helps prevent the generator from moving around.
If you are packing other items as well, avoid placing any cargo on top of the power equipment.
Use Safe Driving Practices
You'll want to be extra careful when driving with a generator in your vehicle or trailer.
Try to maintain as even of a speed as possible. Turn and lane chance slowly and smoothly. Leave more distance between your vehicle and other motorists on the road. If another vehicle suddenly stops, you'll have more time to bring your vehicle to a stop.
